Boundaries & Agency: Cultivating Awareness and Challenging Traditional Power Structures in Creative Spaces

This workshop is for any creative practitioner, actor, teacher, administrator, director, dancer, artist, who wishes to explore the ideas of power, agency, boundaries, and creative collaboration, and discuss solutions to problematic power dynamics that exist in creative/theatrical spaces today.*

Through breath work, movement, voice work, improv, applied theatre practices and discussion, we will explore the ways in which we can access our own agency and boundaries within traditional power structures and imagine ethical collaboration techniques for the future.

Led by fellow graduates of the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London, Sarah Nichols (MFA Voice Studies) and Anna Claire Walker (MA Applied Theatre), this workshop will consist of two 1:45 minute sessions with a half hour break.

Facilitator Bios:

Sarah Nichols is a voice, accent, and communication coach with an MFA in Voice Studies from The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London. Based in Washington, DC, she coaches and teaches movement, breathing, vocal production, dialects, accent modification, presence and communication, and public speaking. With a BFA in Musical Theatre and years of onstage experience, Sarah is passionate about contributing her expertise to the worlds of theatre and film, as well as bringing elements of performance training into the corporate arena. Because voice is a manifestation of self, improving one's function of, and relationship to, their voice is inherently an act of self-improvement. She am passionate about equipping her students and clients with valuable vocal tools and techniques, as well as facilitating a deeper connection to the self.

Anna Claire Walker is a non-profit manager, performer, facilitator, puppeteer, and comedian, with an MA in Applied Theatre from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London, UK. With a special focus on ethical collaboration in communities, she has worked as a facilitator and producer on a variety of creative projects. From producing a podcast with a group of socially excluded seniors, to performing as a puppeteer in a street festival that aimed to mend community conflict, Anna Claire is passionate about using art and performance as a tool for social change. She is a published academic writer, teaching artist, and consultant who aims to have inclusion and equity at the forefront of her work. Wither over a decade of ensemble and devising experience, Anna Claire is excited to explore this much needed conversation regarding power dynamics in theatre and other creative spaces.
